In the same breath, installation shot
Collaboration with Joële Walinga
September 7 - October 13, 2018
Gallery 44, Toronto
This exhibition investigates the transference of memory from one living thing to another. "In the same breath" documents Nauta and Walinga speaking their most intimate memories to plants, capturing these interactions in a series of silent videos and cyanotype prints. Exploring the possibility that plants can retain memory and hold emotions, cuttings from these plants are distilled, creating scents to accompany the works and offering intimate possibilities for engaging the natural world.

OUGHT compiles the variety of suggestions posed by parents to their artist children in misguided attempts to support, encourage, or simply understand. OUGHT exhibits the materialization of these sometimes ridiculous ideas, as artists actually attempt to create or fulfill what was suggested of them.
The show illustrates examples of non art-world or art-educated ideas of the function and aesthetic of art, while simultaneously illuminating the underlying encouragements and discouragements that exist at the foundation of the woman artist.
